Shoo shooo...

Get this, yeah; I was waiting for Megat at Pavilion's staircase near the entrance and sat down. A guard came near me and literally shooed me away! Fucking hell I was only sitting down.. I went to the concierge to complain:
Afiq: I was just sitting over there and one of your guards shooed me away. I would like an explaination!
Concierge girl: I'm sorry sir but you're not allowed to sit there.
Afiq: May I know why?
CG: Pavillion is a high end shopping complex and we would like to maintain a certain image. Loittering around the staircase will go against this image.
Afiq: This image of this mall being a place for the affluent and rich? How is sitting down at the staircase make this place look lowly and inferior? i'm not disrupting the flow of the people, there is hardly anyone there!
CG: I understand, but what you did will come down negatively to our consumers.
Afiq: I too understand where you're going at. Let me put it this way: I'm tired so I had to sit down. I didn't want to wait for my friend to arrive at cafes because then I'll have to spend my money on drinks. I'm tired and thrifty. These are human traits shared by both the rich and poor. I don't see any reason why these two traits, in your opinion, contradict with this mall's image.
CG: But you will make our consumers...
Afiq: I am one of those people you regard so highly. I am your customer.
CG: But you...
Afiq: And I can see that you're wearing a Customer is Always Right badge. As a customer, not only I have the right to utilize your facilities as I see fit, I can also tell you that you're wrong to think what you're thinking.
CG: Mmmmm... okay. I will tell the guard to let you sit.
Just after the concierge girl told the guard to let me sit on the staircase, Megat arrived.
Megat: Afiq, jom pergi tengok wayang.
Afiq: Jap, kita kena duduk dekat tangga ni for 5 minutes.
Megat: Nape?
Afiq: Less asking, more sitting!

To be fair and frank, loitering around or sitting on staircases have always been perceived as being an uncultured and unrefined habit usually associated with low-income society, eg. mat rempits. The concierge was just doing her job to protect the interests of the consumers who are of high-income society. You must also ponder, the management did allow ppl to loiter there before so these complaints must be coming from high-end consumers who were unhappy. True, they should invest more in benches so the public would have a proper place to rest and i must agree, the shooing method is very impolite. But they're just doing their job so kalau terasa tu, just deal with it.

"As a customer, not only I have the right to utilize your facilities as I see fit". If this was true and everyone felt the same way, then we'd all be seeing vandalized public toilets and payphones all over pavilion. While we do have the right to utilize the facilities, it must come with proper usage and etiquette. The same way ppl wipe down gym equipments after they use it, because it pleases everyone in the same boat. The same way people would sit on a bench rather than on a staircase.

"I can also tell you that you're wrong to think what you're thinking." Like I said, she was just doing her job. She was polite enough to talk to the guard for you but what she said before was right. You may not see that loitering on staircases would make the place lowly and inferior, but i'm willing to bet that the people who go there to do their shopping would disagree.

Yeah, i very much agree with Rob Chia. It was quite unfair of you to argue with the CG when she was just doing her job. Same as the guard. They were just doing what mgmt had asked them to do.

kesian the concierge girl but handling difficult people like me is a part of her job.

i was only trying to sit down to wait but a guard from the slums of bangladesh shooed me away like a chicken. i know its meaningless to scold the bangla because he cant speak a word of english or malay so i channelled my anger on the well versed CG. had he not wounded my pride, i wouldnt have gone to great length to prove my point.

good point rob... every mall should at least have some benches tho.. but yea... i do find people sitting on stairs and loitering dam annoying. okies.

I know, right? You'd think a high-end mall with lavish bathrooms would have sufficient benches for customers to sit. Don't want ppl to loiter at the stairs? Make more benches, duh. I guess shooing ppl is cheaper alternative.

'slums of bangladesh'? sorry afiq, but i am quite offended with that. i have friends from bangladesh, friends living in slums, and even an uncle who is a guard.

all humans are equal regardless of race and rank. i didn't need to learn that in the many uia subjects to be aware of that.

what you think i dont have bangladeshi friends issit??? You think ur the only one?

Of course he and I are equals. There's nothing wrong with living in slums. it's not a desease or anything bad like that.

Fot thinking like that in the first place, ur the one who perpetuated inequality.

Good one, Rob. It's common all over the world for shopping complexes to not let people loiter around their facilities. What's new about that? And the poor guard and concierge were just doing their jobs.

Did it give you a sense of achievement by 'proving your point' to the CG? I think you can do better than that la..
